Precision Manufacturing Services Limited was founded in 1976 as a toolroom making wax injection moulds for the investment casting industry and based at the BICTA offices on Charles Street near the centre of Sheffield. The first EMB diecasting machine was sited at the back of the factory with castings spilling out in Charles Lane. It was incredibly cramped and the business was eventually split and moved. The toolroom relocated to Carlisle Street in Sheffield and the diecasting machines moved to Henley Grove Road, Rotherham under a newly constructed company PMS Diecasting Ltd.

PMS Diecasting Ltd was incorporated on 22nd March 1978 – Company Registration No. 1359427 by Neil Gordon Panter. The company was set up to manufacture zinc diecast angle brackets used for joining aluminium extrusion in the construction of domestic greenhouses. The Company selling the greenhouses was Linkman Buildings and they had a 50% stake in PMS Diecasting Ltd. When Linkman Buildings got into financial trouble they wanted to sell their stake in PMS Diecasting Ltd and this was bought by Neil who now owned 100% of the business, the problem was it had no customers so Neil developed a trimming knife and hacksaw handle in zinc and sold these to the National Coal Board (NCB). From these intial products PMS Handtools Ltd was formed and eventually sold a range of hand products to all the major DIY multiples.

PMS Diecasting Ltd was bought from Precision Manufacturing Services Ltd for £350,000. The zinc diecasting foundry was situated at Unit 11, Braithwell Way, Hellaby and was separate from the main business at Bradmarsh Business Park, Templeborough which was producing own band handsaws for all the major DIY multiples. The customer base was extremely small: Aquadart (Croydex), Hall Garden Products, Swann-Morton, Deans Blinds, Sykes Pickavant and Hurfar. Gordon and Robin put £100,000 in to buy the business and £250,000 was funded by the Co-operative bank through the Government Small Firms Loans Guarantee scheme. PMS Diecasting is founded as an employee owned business with the initial staff having a part share of the business.

Britax PMG finds PMS on the internet and we quoted for a 2 impression Mounting Bracket Tool. XL Toolmakers (John Hepworth) in Cleckheaton manufactures a 2 impression tool for £10,500.00. This product is the start of many products which were transferred to PMS as they consolidated their diecasting supplier base. Britax becomes PMS’s largest customer and PMS provides the powder coated finish.

John Joyce (Engineering Director) and Les Cooper (Production Director) turn up at PMS Diecasting with the PMS contact page from the web site. One of the largest users of zinc diecasting in the UK is based in Sheffield and Gordon didn’t realise. However, the web site did its job and brought the customer to us. After a visit by Hugh Facey it was agreed that Gripple would put tooling down with PMS for the Hangfast No.2 and Medium Gripple products. The inital production didn’t go particularly well as there were different versions and interpretation of the 2D drawings as well as different cavities of Medium gripples from Avon PDC going down different machines. This highlighted the need to consolidate and get more consistent products especially where multiple tools were in existence.

PMS is awarded ISO 9001:2000 with the assistance of Terry Roney, quality consultant.

Hugh Facey buys shares in PMS Diecasting and becomes a Director. The Employee Ownership Scheme is formally introduced.


Gripple plus range launched and PMS is the preferred supplier for the new products

Frech Real Time diecasting machines are ordered two at a time to match the increased business from Gripple and the introduction of Gripple Plus range


PMS becomes the sole supplier of zinc diecast housings to Gripple replacing Avon Pressure Diecasting in the Midlands. PMS now inherits a number of old diecasting tooling which is not designed for robotic automation and it takes over two years to convert the tools to run on our diecasting cells.


PMS Team: Simon Woodward, Clayton Clarke, Andrew Millard, Elizabeth Monks, Danny Williams, Paul Burgin, Robin Mokryj, Artan Sula, Gordon Panter, Erita Sprudzane, Renars Liepins, Allan Follows. Robin Mokryj, initial founder and shareholder retires after 8 years.


New website and logo launched with strap line In Technology We Trust


PMS commissions Peter and Paul Design Agency to re-brand PMS and develop a new Website with company video on the home page. The new strap line incorporated was FLUID THINKING


GoTools Ltd is formed in 2012 by Steven Green, Gordon Panter and Andrew Millard. Frustrated with the lack of tool makers for die and cavity mould making in the local area we decided to set up GoTools to manufacture high quality tooling with an emphasis on prodcution performance during the tool life. Steven Green stepped down after one year and Andrew Millard was given the opportunity to run GoTools. In 2013 GoTools bought J&B Toolmakers and Steve Barrowcliffe joined creating the best equipped toolroom in the area within 2 years.

PMS Diecasting Ltd is unanimously voted into GLIDE (Growth Led Innovation Driven Employee company). PMS first GLIDE reps are Dawn Culf and Simon Hardwick. Sean Starbuck replaces Dawn Culf in 2014.

Highly commended component of the year at the ‘Cast Metal Federation Awards in 2015 for the Angel Hanger. The Angel has been designed and manufactured wholly in the UK by Gripple Ltd in collaboration with it’s sister company PMS Diecasting Ltd, making this a truly ‘Great British Product’.


Expansion at PMS sees the creation of a Diecasting Hall 2 and will see the introduction of several additional Frech Diecasting machines.

The new broaching jig designed and manufactured by Gripple Automation.

Rosler vibratory finishing and drying equipment was installed to process high value items.


PMS successfully tested and built the UK’s first hot runner tooling for producing zinc diecast Gripple wire joiners, a technology that was recognised in the industry as being highly innovative by the Cast Metals Federation.

Matt Godhard becomes Managing Director of PMS Diecasting. Gordon Panter retires from this role and becomes Chairman.

PMS launches it’s own employee app. Employees can check events calendar, send in holiday requests, suggestion box items and enter competitions..


The new PMS Diecasting website is launched.
