Three Peaks Challenge
Wednesday, May 24, 2017
On Saturday 20th May, Matt Hanson set out with 26 members of the Sheffield Wednesday community programme which included his dad, brother and two family friends, to raise money for St Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield.
The hike started at 07:00 with a steep incline up the first peak Pen-y-Ghent. After reaching the summit it was then a steady descent to the foot of Whernside passing the Ribblehead viaduct before the heavens opened which made for an intense and challenging half a mile incline to the summit.
With the worsening weather, the sheer drop off the side of Whernside was pretty tough for the team to work their way down but nothing compared to the final incline to the top of Ingleborough.
“Getting to the top of the Ingleborough Wall was the toughest part of the hike”, Matt said. “After reaching the final summit, still with 5 miles to go, finally the sun came back out.”
The final 5 miles was completed in 1 hour 43 minutes and Matt completed the whole Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge in 11 hours 27 minutes.
“Thank you all for your amazing support and helping me raise a huge £425 for St Luke’s Hospice It was a very rewarding experience and that my plans are to hike the ‘National Three Peaks’ before doing Mount Kilimanjaro in the near future.”
