FINISHING

We have extensive in-house facilities for finishing operations and surface preparation. PMS diecasting also offers a complete range of decorative finishes and performance coatings from our approved metal finishing sub-contractors.

Corrosion Resistance

Zinc plating involves zinc metal being electrodeposited on to components. Electro zinc offers excellent corrosion resistance and sacrificial protection. A typically thicknesses of 10-12µm with passivation can be achieved, resulting in over 500 hours salt spray test.

Zinc plating is available with a range of trivalent passivates: clear, yellow and black to meet the EVL and RoHS directives. Trivalent passivate is the best and most advanced in operating available technology for meeting the end of life vehicle requirements (EOLVD); it is also easily recyclable.

Clear passivate is used mainly as a decorative finish and has a clear / blue sheen to it.

The majority of applications uses this standard passivate, which leaves an iridescent / rainbow finish.

Black passivate is used mainly as a decorative finish.

Decorative

Zinc diecastings are commonly used to produce aesthetic parts with a range of decorative plated finishes.

Powder Coating

Our powder coating subcontractor operates a five stage pre-treatment plant using a high performance iron phosphate process to improve the adherence of paint on the zinc diecastings.

Once the castings are cleaned a uniform powder coating is applied and then baked in a controlled oven at around 180 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes.  This provides a high quality surface finish which can be supplied in various textures and also gives high levels of salt spray protection for corrosion resistance particularly important in the window and door hardware market.

Jig Plating

The Jig Plating process gives the highest quality finishes on our diecast components.  In order to give the best results bespoke jigs have to be purchased to conduct the current and ensure that the contact points are away from the “A” face.  The quality of the contacts will also determine the quality and consistent thickness of the final plating.

The range of plated finishes and the colours is vast, also various lacquers or brushing techniques give clever finishes replicating material like stainless steel, tungsten and brushed gold.
